The first round of the III International Competition of Ballet Dancers has come to an end. 21 participants are going to perform in the second round.
In the first round, according to the terms of the competition, young performers presented classical choreography. The most popular among women was “Kitri Variation from Act IV of the ballet “Don Quixote”. Kitri was lucky. Nine dancers presented at the Astana Opera stage image of the daughter of an innkeeper from Ludwig Minkus “Don Quixote”.
Performing Kitri, ballet dancers have the opportunity to demonstrate paradigmatic purity and correctness of dance, the skill to emphasize every detail, every detail of the image. Someone did it better, someone a little worse, but everybody tried hard.
Variations of the picture “Shadows” of “La Bayadere” ballet and Giselle from Adolphe Adam’s ballet “Giselle” became the second most popular image. They were danced five times.
Dianas from “Esmerada” ballet by Cesare Pugnu entered the scene four times. The jury and the audience were able to assess the three Odettes from the ballet “Swan Lake” by Pyotr Tchaikovsky.
Men were not limited to variations of the five performances as ballerinas. The dancers presented the heroes of 11 ballets. Nevertheless, the most popular among them was “Don Quixote”. The palm belonged to Basil. Further, according to the degree of execution frequency: Actaeon from the “Esmeralda” by Cesare Pugni, the Prince of “The Nutcracker” by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, James of “La Sylphide” by Herman Levenskholda.
However, the frequency of performances does not mean nothing. The main thing is not “how often”, but “how”.
Ballet mistress Elena Sherstneva noted almost perfect performance of Yerkin Rakhmatullaev’s variations of Siegfried from the ballet “Swan Lake” by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and kindly answered a few questions.
The performances, which the contestants presented in the first round, are probably traditional for all competitions. The same variations of the same plays?
Yes, most of performed variations are traditional at competitions. Maybe Odette variation from “Swan Lake” is not as popular as Kitri.
Which company is stronger: male or female?
Men’s company seems to be stronger. And the artists of the theater “Astana Opera” are fine fellows, I am proud of them. They proved themselves very bright. I think this is a great merit of Constantine Yevgenyevich Zaklinsky. They came out and it was immediately clear: hands on the ground, legs on the ground, all honed and tested. Everyone knows what they are doing, to what they aspire and what do they want to tell us.
Isn’t it difficult for the jury to watch same variation?
This is normal. You know, it is not the hardest day for them today. Sometimes you have to watch the same variation seven times in a row and them the same amount of time another one.
Are all the young artists able to perform at competitions?
It is a “pen test” for the young. The next time they will be stronger, more confident. You know, there are competitive and non-competitive artists. Sometimes a very interesting artist does not get to win any places, no medals at a competition. Conversely, the artist can shine at the competition, but it is not interesting to look at him in the play. In this case, there are a lot of reasons, things, and nuances.
The Astana Opera Hall reigned friendly atmosphere. The audience as it could helped artists to cope with anxiety, supported by applause. Some participants felt more relaxed and were able to cope with the “trembling at the knees”, and it was more difficult to regain self-possession and they made mistakes.
After the performances of the contestants the jury retired for an hour and decided who are we going to see in the second round. Sitting in the hall, I heard this remark: “Most likely, they’re going to pass all of them”. However, the jury decided otherwise.
The Executive secretary Sergey Usanov, coming on the scene, said that the jury can not pass all the participants to the next round.
“Competition is competition. Someone performs more successful, someone is less. Everything can change tomorrow. Those who did not pass into the next round do not need to upset. You have made a big step forward, you were working hard. We are waiting for you at other competitions and will be glad to your achievements”.
Then Sergey Usanov called the names of participants who will perform in Astana Opera in the second round of the competition.
